In the early 1990s, the Uruguay Round led to the establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO), ushering in an era where the world’s nations began to form a single, integrated market. By 1997, the Green Round brought global attention to environmental concerns in international trade, and more recently, the Ethics Round, led by the United States, has called for the regulation of products and services from unethical companies in global markets.

Until recently, acts such as bribery conducted outside of Korea were not punishable under domestic law. However, in today’s globalized 21st century, corruption is viewed as a cross-border issue. Under U.S. leadership, the Anti-Corruption Round began within the OECD framework, leading to the announcement of the OECD Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Public Officials in International Business Transactions in February 1999.

As a result, Korea has enacted the Act on Preventing Bribery of Foreign Public Officials, established the Anti-Corruption Commission, and supported activities of the Korea Business Ethics Association. These developments have brought significant changes to traditional business practices.

Unethical conduct by companies now results in a decline in public trust, reduced sales and profits, lower employee morale, and decreased productivity.
